ERC-20 Token Standard
ERC-20 is a technical standard for fungible tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. It defines a common set of rules that all compliant tokens follow, enabling wallets, exchanges, and dApps to interact with any ERC-20 token the same way.
Understanding the Concept
• Defines functions like transfer, approve, and balanceOf • Most tokens on Ethereum follow this standard • Enables interoperability across the entire ecosystem • Other standards exist (ERC-721 for NFTs, ERC-1155 for multi-tokens)
Real-World Example
USDC, LINK, and UNI are all ERC-20 tokens. Because they follow the same standard, MetaMask can display all of them, Uniswap can trade all of them, and Aave can accept all of them as collateral. You don't need special software for each token because they all speak the same language.
