Order Flow

Order flow is the analysis of actual buy and sell orders entering the market, including their size, timing, and aggression. Unlike price-based analysis, order flow shows what's happening behind price movements and reveals supply/demand imbalances in real-time.

Understanding the Concept

• Shows whether buyers or sellers are more aggressive • Footprint charts visualize order flow at each price level • Large orders (institutional flow) often predict direction • Requires specialized tools and real-time exchange data

Real-World Example

Price sits at $100 but order flow shows 5x more market buy orders than sells hitting the book. Aggressive buyers are absorbing all selling pressure. Even though price hasn't moved yet, this bullish order flow suggests an imminent breakout. Traders using this data position long before the move is obvious.
